Hi-

There is a strong possibility my 6 month pregnant wife will be laid off from her job. To prepare for this, we're looking at our budget. We believe she will initially qualify for unemployment while she looks for work. Hopefully she will be able to work for 2+ more months as we get close to her due date.

How is it determined when she is not able to work? When she has the baby, she obviously won't be able to work...but how do you qualify for unemployment again after having the baby?

I'm hoping we won't have to go this road, but I'm not optimistic an employer will want to hire her until after she's had the baby.

Thanks- Bob

You can apply for unemployment ins. whenever you are ready, able & willing to work (looking for work).

How many employees does your wife's employer have? Are there others being laid off also?

There are 14 employees. They are also considering a workshare arrangement for other employees, or they may just lay off 2-3 employees.

So if she is looking for work 2 weeks after having the baby, she could qualify for UI benefits?

Thank you for responding- Bob

Ok. I just wanted to be sure she wasn't being laid off (discriminated against)because of her pregnancy. It seems the co. is having "economic" problems.

She can apply for unemployment ins. anytime that she is ready to return to work (able to work) & looking for work.

Congrats on the baby.
