I had a question or two about a situation I am in. I've been with the company I work for now for three years. Because of hard times we're in, the company decided to reduce full time to 35 hours. I was transfered from my position because they got rid of the department I worked in. I transfered to a new department within the company and everything was going well. Recently, the company downsized and they let most employees from the night shift go. Apparently, they let too many guys go and they need some of the day crew guys to transfer to nights. They are choosing the guys based on seniority. Because I am new to the department, I am one of those guys although I hold seniority over half the day crew (high turnover rate). I talked to my supervisor and he wants me to stay on his shift, so he advised me to talk to his boss. I did and he said I am first on the list to transfer because they "are not going off of company time, they are going off department time". I told him this new schedule will not work for me. I am a full time student and I have a child. He didn't budge. I was wondering if anyone has some advice for my situation... If I am fired because i refuse to work that shift, what happens? Can I collect unemployment? I don't want to lose my job but, school is a top priority for me.
Thank you, sincerely.
Thank you, sincerely.
