Hello,
My apartment complex was built in phases, and I live in one of the earlier phases. These earlier phases were not built with locks on the outer, hallway doors. However, the newer buildings all have outer locks and speaker/buzzer systems. The area we live in is safe enough, but only a short drive away is a rather shady area. There have also been reports of a lot of apartment break-ins on the nearby campus over the last few weeks. in additions to that, cars in these parking lots are frequently broken into (I even witnessed an attempted robbery on halloween).
We, and others in the earlier phases, have asked the management to install locks on the front doors, but they refuse. (They don't, for some reason, refuse to install locks on the laundry room doors with-in the buildings....)
Shady area aside, does this not violate the Michigan Fair Housing Act? Why should only half of us get to feel safe in our buildings when we all pay the same amount of rent?
