Hello, im sorry for this being my first post, i hope i didnt skip any steps in being able to post questions and what not, like other sites...

Anyways, Im posing this question here as sort of my last resort...

I have been unemployed for nearly 2 years now. I was slowly let go from my old job, and was OK with it at the time, becuse my wife and I had alittle bit of a cushion to work on, and the employer was a friend of mine, and we understood his situation.

Well, now im starting to get down to having problems. In the begining, i passed up a few mediocre jobs because i was looking for the right job to come my way, and again wasnt seriously worried yet, and as time went by i had convienient times when i would sell items of my own that i didnt use anymore, and it would seem like i still had money in the bank.... anyways, enough of that.

what i would like some help on here is this. Im actively searching for work, i am registered at the michigan works office, but in the last 5 months there has been NOTHING to offer. I need to know if there is any way i can qualify for unemployment benifits?

I know the first qualification is that you had to have been employed within the last 18 months, which i have NOT been, BUT is there any way around that at all? any circumstances or anything???

I am currently seeking work, and i meet every other qualification, except the 18 month rule.

Its getting down to our last dollar, and with my wifes loosing her job soon, we dont know what else to do. we have nothing else to sell either lol... i guess thats not funny at all, but anyways....

Thanks

Taylor

There is no law preventing you from applying. There is no cost to do so and no penalty for being wrong.

However, if you have not worked within the base period it is quite unlikely that you will qualify. I'm not aware of any loopholes or special circumstances.

I will add that my opinion and two dollars will get you a cup of coffee, so you certainly can't do yourself any harm by applying and seeing what the state has to say.

Some states allow for an alternative "initial claim date", but I'm not sure if Michigan is one of them. Normally, however, if the state does allo it, the circumstances that must exist for an alternate initial claim date have to have been beyond your control. You'll probably have to call the UI agency and ask them specifically.

thank you for that information.

I was going to apply, but i wasnt sure what problems would occur.

I tried looking for the phone number to the UI agency, but i cannot come up with anything for michigan.

is there a special place to find these numbers?

I MIGHT have a phone number for them but I won't know till I get home tonight. Is there a number on the website?

In some states you can apply on line but I don't know if Michigan is one of them.

well, i can find the number for what michigan calls MARVIN, but its all automated, and you cant talk to a person .

I can try to file on line, and see what happens from thare, michigan will allow that.
