My boyfriend was terminated a few weeks ago but usually they give you a green slip to sign but he never got one. The store manager just said you are terminated and get out of my store. My boyfriend doesn't even know why he was fired.....Is there some sort of law or policy on how they terminate someone.
He signed up for unemployment and talked to the agency and they asked to get out his green slip and he said he never got one and they thought that was really weird. The only thing he can think of as to what they would have put down for termination would be sexual harrasment, because a girl he sent home for cusing at him got her friends to call in and accuse him of stuff that he never did. Non of it really was sexaul harrasment except one they accused him of but he thinks he got fired for their retaliation and because they might have put that down for the reason of termination, it will cause him to be disqualified from unemployment benefits. Is this true, and if so is it worth fighting?
I'm sure any company is going to try to not have to pay the unemployment, so is it common for them to try to scare you away from it by appealing your unemployment the first time around? I guess what im trying to get at is did they even follow proper procedures to terminate him and can that be held against them to help him get his benefits?

I don't know what you mean by "usually". What is a "green slip"? I couldn't find anything on the state DOL site that states an employer must provide any particular form to a terminated employee.

Well I know when your terminated at least here in michigan they give you a paper called a green slip or maybe it's a different term but that's what I know it as, and the unemployment agency asks for it and its some paper your supossed to sign when you get fired. Arn't they supposed to give some sort of reason of why your fired. I mean, it's kind of scary that they can just fire you without reason and not tell you.

OK, looks like maybe this is it? But I don't see where the employee has to sign.

Hmmm....no I dont think thats it cuz he already did that stuff. He called that inquiry number at the bottom there to ask about why it was taking so long to find out about the unemployment and they asked for his green slip and said the company was going against it (which is probably common, I hope)....maybe you dont sign it but they are supposed to give it to them when they leave....??? I dont know but it's really messed up.

Also if your to be terminated for something arn't they supposed to follow the procedures of the verbal, written and then termination or whatever? Maybe it's not the same everywhere but I thought it was. I thought you couldnt be terminated on retaliation when that's what it clearly was but the company chose not to believe it that way because the store manager was pushing to get rid of him because I think he just didnt like him trying to control his associates or something was going on with him and that girl that caused all this to happen. I guess you cant really proove any of that but dont they have to proove that he supposably did this harrasment? If so, can there proof be that simple phone call from the girl that accused him even when she was lieing? Another thing is I dont know why, after he sent this girl home, she screamed at him saying "I will have your job" and called the store manager crying. Then he showed up at the store and called in every single female employee even when they had nothing to do with what happened, he never asked any of the guys at all. It just seems very suspicious.
I guess we just need help on what the best way is to defending himself from them getting away with murder. He feels like he's guilty until proven inocent.

Company procedures are not law.
