Hello, hopefully someone here can help me.
I am a college students, living with 3 other college students in a house that we have a 1 year lease contract for. The house is very old, when we did a move-in inspection we noted all the broken security lights around the house. Very recently the house was broken into and a significant amount of electronics were stolen.
They had come in through one of the bedroom windows (which was simply popped off the window casing that it slides in, even though we had a metal bar blocking the window from opening) and gone through the rest of the house that way. I contacted the landlord the morning after and told them what happen and requested that they look into installing an alarm system and replacing the windows. She said she'd look into it simply to get off the phone. (I know I need to get it in writing)
This morning, the landlords agent and the agent that had helped us find the house came to take a look at it. The landlords agent claimed that it would be our responsibility if we wanted to install the alarm system. They didnt mention anything about replacing the windows or the security lights.
I don't feel safe living in the house anymore, especially since our landlords don't care about us. When inquiring about canceling the contract, BOTH agents said we couldn't, but nothing is impossible. I'm afraid of living in the house, I can't sleep at night, I can't eat peacefully without looking out the window every 5 minutes and I cant even get any homework done because just being in the house stresses me out.
