I signed a 12 month lease and moved in to my new apartment in New York on Sept. 1. I was supposed to start work here with a company on Sept. 22 but due to recent events it seems highly likely that my offer may be canceled. Is there any NY law that protects the tenant in case of job termination? I've heard that such a law exists in NJ but don't know about NY.

Not that I could find. Read you lease, especially the clause regarding early termination. You may be on the hook for the payments until the landlord can re-rent the unit, unless you and s/he can work something out.
