I'm a customer service rep working for an insurance company in the state of Michigan, and my boss now wants me (and the other reps) to answer the phone using our full name (first & last). This makes us uncomfortable, and we're wondering if he can legally make us reveal our full name. I don't know of any other company that does this.

This is my first time at this site - thanks in advance for any advice I can get.

He cannot make you give out your full name.

He can, however, fire you if you do not.

Agreed. That's a perfectly legal work rule.

Ask, instead, if you can assume an alias that will be static.

In other words, I will always answer my phone as "Conan Miller". Then, if there is a complaint, my boss will know whom the customer is referring to, but there is no chance of a customer finding my house.
