I was at a red light in a school zone in Chatham County, GA. The light turned green and I began to accelerate. I saw a cop car coming up on me going the other way. I glanced down and was going 20 mph. The cop turned on his lights and went past and and turned around behind me. Both me and the car behind me pulled over to allow the cop to pass. He pulled behind me and asked me to pull about 100 ft up the road. I did so and he stated that I was going 35 in a 25. This all occured in less than .15 mile. There is no way I could have accelerate in that amount of time and had the cop car turn around and pull me over and make me pull up 100 ft in that space. He must have tagged another car or something. Now I am forced to go to court since it was 10 over in a school zone. I know that I am right. When I attempted to call for advise on the scene, the cop informed me that I was unable to talk to an attorney on the scene and grabbed the ticket paper back. This is rediculous. What should I do, plea guilty for a lesser sentance? or plea not guilty and sit though a trial. I know I was going 20mph, and I couldn't have acclerated that fast. The only witness was behind me and left when I was pulled over. What sort of fines/points am I looking at?

You can talk to a lawyer while you're on a stop, but it's pointless. What's lawyer going to tell you? He'll tell you to not make any admissions, sign the ticket, then sit down and write notes.

If you delayed the stop so you could make a useless phone call, I can understand the officer getting upset.

This sounds like the RADAR picked up the fastest car in range, not the nearest car. The cop can't testify that your car was the one he tracked if he doesn't know which car the RADAR gave a reading on. It is NOT the nearest car. RADAR cannot be aimed that accurately. The beam must necessarily spread with distance.

I was given proof of this the other day by one of those "YOUR SPEED IS" RADAR signs. I was slowing down for a turn, not over 15, and the sign said 33. It picked up a car almost a block behind me.

He can tell. The radar has a tone that indicates how clear the signal is. If there's another car in the way, he won't get a clear tone that indicates an an obstructed signal return.

Dang, someone else who knows a little about radar. Nice.

Troubleshooter - I thought we talked about this little "Your Speed Is" sign.

That depends on where the cars are. A hill, multiple lanes, or a curve would remove the obstruction.

It would also be something that the officer would observe, and it would interrupt the clear tone that indicates that the radar is getting a clear signal back.
