I've been with my company for 2 1/2 years now. I work a night shift. When I was hired, I was verbally told by my supervisor that I would NOT have to work weekends or holidays since I was working the night shift(this was a courtesy extended to 6 employees including me who are the only 6 who work the night shift). This was the basis of my taking this position.
Well, the girl who works Saturdays is going on vacation in 3 weeks. I checked the schedule, which was put up yesterday(7/31) and saw that I was scheduled to work on Saturday the 23rd of Aug. I HAVE worked a Sat. shift before as a courtesy, but I was always asked months in advance if I could by my supervisor. Well, it just so happens that I have plans for that weekend and I can't work that Sat. I told this to my supervisor and she said I have to and walked away.
Can she do this? Do I have any recourse? Is there a certain amount of time she is required to give me before making a schedule change? I'm supposed to give them a month's notice at least when asking for a vacation or personal day, do they have the same restriction? I'd hate to lose my job over this, but I've got something to do that can't be changed.
