I just got a ticket for 86 in a 65 in NY. My understanding is that by NY laws, this is a standard speeding ticket, but by Virginia laws this is reckless-driving.

My question is: if NY shares the info with VA, will VA treat it as reckless or as a standard speeding ticket?

I haven't had a violation in over a decade, so I'm pretty sure it will be ok regardless, but I'd like to be prepared. Also, should I get a lawyer to help fight/reduce the ticket? Does this usually work?

Thanks for any help!

If you plead guilty or get convicted, then you'll be sentenced under NY laws. Then they'll notify Virgina of the conviction. You need to read Virginia's laws about how they deal with traffic charges like that.

It could be that Virgina requires traffic judges to suspend licenses as part of a sentence. If so, you'd be okay.

It could be that Virgina's DMV suspended licenses of people convicted of certain charges. If that's the case, you could be hosed.

Look in the traffic code under licensing. There's probably a statute or an article on out of state convictions.
