I have a 14 year old son who just started his first job. I was advised to fill out his w-4 as "single - 1". Is this correct?? This is a job at a local farm and he will only be working for 1 month. How should I fill out the form to best benefit him.

If that is his only job, it would be best to file him as exempt. Single 1 is just the default.

For 2007, a single person with annual income less than $8,750 is not required to file a federal income tax return unless tax has already been withheld, then the return is required to get the withheld tax refunded.

If the earned income with this employer will be less than $900, he can claim exempt from federal income tax withholding.
