View Full Version : Making Full Color Copies Of Driver's Licenses? Colorado

Back in the 90's as a Manager I was taught that making a 100% copy, whether black & white or color was against the law and we had to make only B/W at 75% or 150% of original.
I called the Colorado dept. of Labour and Employement this after noon and she said that employers need those copies of our I.D.s (with which I perfectly agree) and she said that a color copy at 100% was perfectly legal now.
Is that true?
Anybody know?
Aren't there too many issues with identity theft and making fake I.D.s, etc?

I am really not comfortable with our H.R. department making these copies and seeing them lying about the office.

I've never heard of any prohibition against making full-size copies in color.

It's not the making of the copies that is the problem. HR not securing them that is the problem.

Yes, what the Colorado DOL told you is accurate.

The laws in CO have changed since the 90's.

The laws in CO have changed since the 90's.

Does that mean it's prohibited or it isn't?

Since it used to be a "No-No" I'm guessing that means that the laws have changed since the 90's to allow this practice.

Again, thank you.

The laws have changed since the 90's to REQUIRE this practice.

Colorado is the lone state to require that I-9 documentation be retained.

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.

Wait...
Now I'm unclear.
I've always known about / practiced the I-9.
I'm very aware of these requirements.
I guess it's the 100% color copy about which I'm concerned.
I know we can/should/are required to make copies.
But in color and 100%?

There is nothing in the law (and as far as I know there never was anything in the law) prohibiting you from making copies at 100% and/or in color.

Whether it is a good idea or not is a matter for debate. It is NOT illegal.
