Can an Virginia employer make an employee work more then 40 hours a week

Yes, and if the employee is nonexempt, OT is required. Thats over 40 worked hours in a workweek as defined by the company, not necesarily a calendar week.

Employers in every state can require an employee to work more than 40 hours in a week. There is no state where mandatory overtime is illegal.

There are a few specific industries where public safety can be affected (airline pilots, truck drivers) that have placed limits on it but for the general population, it's entirely up to the employer.

And everytime I read the disclaimer about duty days for airline pilots I want to say that those duty days vary greatly.

At a major airline, my husband had a 12 hour duty day. He works for a smaller airline now and has a maximum duty day of 14! hours.

Depends if the employee is covered under a CBA. Ordinarily, yes.
