I have a relative who works in a department store. The store itself and the corporation refuse to do anything about the heat in the building. It's so bad that my relative has been developing heat rash and comes home physically ill and throwing up from the heat.

I realize that in a lot of cases, temperature isn't something that's 'protected' since people work in freezers or construction and in extreme temperatures. But, I was wondering if there is anything in Virginia law protecting my relative since she is working in an actual department store. And if not, anything that can be done to pressure this company into making conditions a bit more... well, standable?

Have other employees also complained about the heat? Have any of them been getting sick? Have there been any customer complaints?

There isn't a law in any state that dictates what temperature an employer needs to keep the work environment, regardless of the industry.

Betty's questions are a good place to start when it comes to requesting the employer lower the temperature.

Is there a reason why the heat is so high? Is it ambient temperature, a poorly operating AC unit, the heat turned on in June?

If a retail business has the temp too high, then they will lose customers. Period.

How long has this been going on? Has the company explained about it? The heat would have to be pretty high to have the symptoms you are describing. I cant belive the business would be open if the temp was high enough to cause those kinds of reactions.

Something doesnt make sense here.
