Can I be let go because I am pregnant? I have only worked at my job for 9 weeks and my boss new I was pregnant when I started. Customers complained and said they would not come in because I was working there.
Not because I couldn't do my job just because pregnant women shouldn't be working. Am I going to be able to get Unemployment?

VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION

How many employees does your employer have?

What the heck type of boss would kow-tow to such an old-fashioned idea?

The same type of bosses that generate most of the questions to this website?

In the 1980s I used to work for the boss from the Dilbert comic strip. He apparently had no idea why people kept putting copies of the comic strip up in the lunch room. We got one or two a week that were on point to something that had happened recently.

Discrimination laws in Michigan including pregnancy apply to employers with one or more employees.

You might put in a complaint with the Mi. Dept. of Civil Rights. 1-800-482-3604.

There are 4 employees ( including myself), one of which she just hired because I am gone now on Monday.

You cannot be let go BECAUSE you are pregnant, although since your employer has less than 15 employees you can only file a claim at the state level.

However, being pregnant does not protect you from being fired for other reasons.

What is it that you do, that your customers find your being pregnant to be a problem?

Your employer doesn't have enough employees for the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act to apply but the Michigan discrimination laws (including pregnancy) does apply. You can put in a discrimination complaint with the Mi Dept. of Civil Rights.

Customers complained and said they would not come in because I was working there.

I cannot imagine customers complaining about a pregnant woman working.

Well, I can imagine it, but I can also imagine customer complaints about blacks, hispanics, Jews, Catholics, and more. It could happen, but the company should be glad to lose such customers.

As for the unemployment issue, I see no reason for you to be denied unemployment if you worked for the company long enough and the termination was not for misconduct. Being pregnant is usually not misconduct, although I would make an exception should my unmarried daughter be in that condition.:p
