Since we work in a fast food business, can payroll deductions be taken out of an employees paycheck for shortages on their cash drawers at the end of the night?

Any site quoting for or against this would help also.

Thanks!

Thanks for your response!

Here is my situation now...

We just did the employees paychecks and the deductions were computed as additions. Meaning the cash shortages were entered into our payroll system and when they were entered in incorrectly the system tranmitted them as positives rather then deductions. Can we now, at this point make those deductions on the next pay period? What about the extra money that was added to their paycheck that should've been a deduction, can we deduct that as well?

All the employee know upon hire that any cash shortages will be taken out of their checks and they sign paperwork acknowledging that. What should we do know?

I'll defer to one one of the payroll people who hopefully will be along soon.

You CAN recover a clerical error. You PAID XXXX dollars in error. You can take that back. You CANNOT take that back AND deduct for the shortage as well.
