Hello,

I am a salesperson for a medium sized company based in IL. I am salaried exempt with commissions.

Our leadership is telling me and my team that we are now "required" to do our busy work, sales research and other work related activities during our "nights and weekends" and use our days only making sales calls with no prepratory work. Sr. mgmt has indicated they could care less if we worked 24 hours a day meeting their requirements and we should be happy we have a job.

Is there a maximum amount of time on overtime in a salaried exempt position? Can they force us to work nights and weekends as such?

Insight here is certainly appreciated.

No, sorry, there isn't any general law. If you're looking for "quality of life" it might be time to be dusting off the old resume.

There are only two states that restrict the number of hours an employee can be required to work in a work week, Maine and California. I don't know if California's rules apply to exempt employees. Maine's law does.

Here, you can only be required to work 120 hours this week, so long as you did not work more than 40 hours last week or next week.

Any employer can require most any employee to work nights and weekends.

If you are legitimately an exempt employee (and I am not convinced one way or the other that you are), there is no such thing as "overtime."
