I live in New Jersey but work in New York. I am anticipating taking a leave from work around mid-april to deliver twin girls.

I am trying to plan my leave ahead of time and just discovered that the max amount that NY pays out for short trem disability is 170.00 per week, is that completely acurate? who lives on such an amount? It doesnt even seem worth the trouble.

I found out that NJ is a little over 500 per week, why such a huge difference?

Is there anyway to also claim unemployment insurance at the same time?

Yes it is accurate and the reason for the difference is that the legislatures of the respective states have not seen fit to change the laws. If you are medically unable to work, then you are not eligible for UC.

45 out of 50 states do not have any state disability plan or mandated benefits. $170 is better than nothing.

Hhhhhmmmmm. Is it too late to purchase one? Is their anyway to get a private policy, any recommendations?

We can't make recommendations here.

It is unlikely that you can purchase a policy now that will cover you for a pregnancy already "in progress" but all you can do is try.

Yep. I didn't mean to imply that you could buy a policy now that would cover the pregnancy. I only meant to say that the time to buy disability insurance, like any other kind, is before you need it.:o
