Hi everyone! I went to file taxes and my accountant told me that the unemployment insurance i collected might be wrong as i was out of country. i am an IT professional and location from where i look for employment does not matter; i use the internet to search for jobs. I stayed out of country and kept applying. Once i had a feeling i was about to get a job, i came back. I collected UI in the meantime.

I searched NY's DOL site but nothing specific. Now what? Should i contact DOL and find out? i'm just worried that if i knock on their doors, they may do more than a penalty?

Confused.

the amount was probably $4k... not sure 100%.

I'm confused. If you earned enough wages in the benefit period to qualify for UI benefits, and you were ready, able and willing to work, and were searching for work, the benefits are legitimate. I'd leave it alone. Most tax accountants are not experts on UI laws.
