Well, my father is passing in a few months, cancer. I am from Charleston WV and have been working for the Federal Government as a WL-8 in Anchorage Alaska for the past 17 years. I have a combined goverment time (with my military time) of 23 this November, I am under FERS.

I have 2 sisters that are unmarried, one living in my mothers home running a business from it and the other living in town as well. The sister living at home had a serious illness which forced her to move into Charleston and run her business from the home to be close to a better hospital.

So, my mother is 77 years old living in a 3000 sf home on a hill.....I am going to have to go back to take care of her. My sisters no nothing of taking care of a home and both work full time.

My question, will I be able to file for any type of Alaska Unemployment when I resign my position with the Federal Government?

Thanks much for any replies to my "lengthly" question.

Sincerely
RB

In order to qualify for unemployment, you have to be actively seeking a job and ready to accept employment when a job is offered. If you won't be job hunting, you're not going to be eligible for unemployment. And, generally, resigning your job doesn't qualify you, even if you have a compelling reason such as yours to do so.

As a federal employee, you are entitled to 12 weeks leave with job protection under the Family and Medical Leave Act, so you may want to look at taking leave rather than resigning your position.
