Sometimes I show up for work and two hours into my eight hour shift they tell me that my shift has been cut and I have to leave in two hours. So I only work 4 out of 8 hours. My friend said that there is a law that you have to be told at least 24 hours of a schedule cut. Does anyone know this law? I've been searching but I can't find it. Thanks.

Califrornia has rules not found in other parts of the country, but I doubt that even that state requires 24 hours notice of a schedule change.
In your case, the company had to pay you four hours, whether you worked a minute or four hours. State law. They could have cut you loose after fifteen mintes or even less, but still have to pay you for half of your scheduled shift, not to exceed four hours.
Few states require what is called reporting time. You are complaining about a right that does not exist in most other states.
