Is it legal for my boss to discuss my wages with other employees who are not management, just equal to me?
I'm a cosmetologist. I just started out in March. I work in a small salon that only has four stylists and a massage therapist. One stylist makes 60% commission and is full time. Another makes 50% and is part time. The stylist is our owner. And then there's me, I'm hourly because I'm just starting and do a lot of our cleaning and receptionist work when I'm not busy. The way we are paid is by writing our 'totals' (or in my case hours) in our books and our boss calls them into our 'tax lady' and then fills out blank checks to each of us. Later that day the 'tax lady' calls us back and whoever answers the phone writes down what everyone's check will be and fills our checks. So it's then common knowledge how much we each make. Well our part-time stylist got upset because my checks are more than hers and she's been doing hair for 7 years (but only at this salon for a year) and she complains to my boss about this. My boss is very impressionable and the stylist is very manipulative. My boss then goes to the stylist that makes 60% and starts talking about taking me down to just 50% commission (which would be the equivalent of a decrease in about $3 an hour in pay).
Is it legal for her to be discussing MY wages with other employees? I was under the impression that MY wages couldn't be disclosed to anyone? Any information or input would be great.
