Looking for info on what steps an employer should make if contacted by a person who states that a current employee has stolen their identity. Police report has been filed, but authorities have not contacted the company. Should employer talk with employee about allegations, or should employer wait for official notice from authorities?

This is between the other person and the police. You have no legal obligation to a person who is not your employee.

How long has this other person been working for you? Do you have copies of the documents he/she submitted for the I-9? Do they look "genuine on their face"?

The employee has been employed for couple of years. Reviews of the photocopies indicate that they looked valid at presentation. I am new to the organization and new to h/r, so I wanted to make sure that I followed the law in the way that I handle the situation.

Thanks for your info. :)

I don't think you need to do anything else, then.

Agreed. Also, the person claiming that their ID was stolen is not necessarily telling the truth.

You have no legal obligation to do anything as this has nothing to do with the employment relationship. I don't even know why the authorities would contact the employer regarding the criminal complaint. If, at some point, you should discover this employee is working for you under false pretences (i.e. he's not who he says he is, lied on his application/resume, etc.), then you certainly are free to terminate him but that's entirely up to you.

BTW, just because someone called and made this allegation doesn't mean it's true.

I agree. I would stay out of it unless you find out for sure he is using a false identity & then take any action you deem necessary at that time.
