I work for a family owned company. The owner and I had had discussions about the increase in my workload and the increase in salary that should accompany it. He kept putting me off for 3 weeks, saying he had to talk to the office managers to see what would work best for the company as a whole. Then he makes an office announcement that we have a new President/COO that will be running the show. I asked the old owner if I should talk to this person about our discussion. he said yes.
Well, in this talk it was pointed out to me that when I first started with this company I made it clear I was taking an admin role because the hours and flexability worked very well for me, as i put my family first. That I cannot expect to get a position of real responsability if I cant be counted on to be there if my child is sick or family emergency. I also am working the same amount of hours, so how could there be more of a workload? The end of this 1 & 1/2 hr long talk was me saying I had to think about things. He responded with - If you will continue with this company? - I said yes. then he realized what might happen and started saying he really didn't want me to go, really needed me in his future plans, knew what an amazing job I do and what I am capable of, blah blah. My reponse to him was - well, compensate me for that then. his reponse was - I know you hate it when I use this word, but you are such a B****. I said I am only trying to take care of me because someone has to.
It was a very back and forth convo and very long. The whole time, he was tryin to make me feel like I was wrong in my arguments and not justified in my complaints. He brought up my old position of Exec VP with another company and said I needed to realize I was not that anymore.
Do I do anything about this? I don't even want to be there anymore.

Negotiate a higher wage or seek employment elsewhere, don't know what else to tell you. People rarely think they make enough and employers usually think they do.

My main concerns are:
1 - I was told that I can't expect a position of responsibility because I made it clear that family comes first, and when my child is sick or there is a family emergency I would't be around. (we have a remote server, so all can access from home)
2. - when I told him I wanted to be compensated for the "great job, blah blah" I'm doing, I was called a B****.

I understand your position totally however i don't know what else to tell you;

1 - the employer can pay you whatever they think is fair as long as they are meeting the minimum wage requirements ,for some reason they are concernced about your ability to be relied upon, they are entitled to their opinion as are you.

2 - calling you a b**** is completely unprofessional but in no way illegal.

Agreed.

However, if I was called a like name during an employment reevaluation, I would have told him where to stick the job.... after, of course, he had folded it until it was nothing but sharp corners.

Here is what I mean. You are either valued or you are not. If they want to keep you, they get to pay for the priviledge. If not, then you leave and they hire someone else and you find another job.

Just know that the course of action may mean you have to find other employment.

I just have a question here - but who takes up the slack for when you are gone for your family ? Right or wrong I tend to agree with the employer on the point of another employee being able to be relied on more. If I am sitting here as a single person and my kids are all grown and I can be counted on to work OT and such over somone who might be gone alot then I would expect to be given more responsibility. No on has the right to call you any names though
