I was terminated yesterday after working with a company for about 9 months. The first 6 months I was contracting and then hired full time. The reasons they gave for my termination were lack of leadership, performance and insubordination. I have never been talked to about any of the issues or reprimanded. I am ex military and have always said yes sir, no sir, yes m'am, no m'am, so the insubordination hits pretty hard. Also my employees were productive and for the most part happy and I focused on team building successfully for the last several months.

The issue I have with this is that they are slandering me and my career by stating these things about me, these statements also making me ineligible for unemployment in the state of NC. I think if my employees and other staff with the company, including consultants, were interviewed they would say that none of this is true.

Do I have any course of action against the company? I am not sure where to turn and I may hire an attorney when I get another job to see if I can get these things wiped off my record as I may try to get my security clearance to work with the DoD again in my career.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Kind regards.

No, you do not have any cause of action against them. You can't sue them for their opinions, whether you agree with them or not.

You will also have the chance to state your part of the story when applying for unemployment. If they refuse, you can ask for an appeal, and have a meeting with your old bosses there. Both of you will state what you have to state, and then a decision will be made on whether you get unemployment or not. When you apply for a job, let them know you did your best, but this is what they are claiming, and you do not know why. When a potential employer tells what is up before the old job does, it seems more like they have nothing to hide. It is no promise, but maybe a better chance at getting another job. I hope you get another job you want!! Good luck!
