My boyfriend and I have a debate going on that needs settled. In the State of PA, are there laws that state that no one person (over the age of 18) can work more then a certain amount of hours in one day?

EXAMPLE: I am the manager at a gas station. I have two clerks working under me. I opened my store one morning, starting my shift at 5am. My one clerk called off and the other was out of town. I was unable to pull in an employee from another store forcing me to stay the entire day and to close at 12am. He is trying to tell me that this is not legal and that something needs to be done about it. The only law I recall in the state of PA about amount of hours worked only applies to minors. Who is right?

Thanks in advance!!

You are.

NO state limits the number of hours an employee can be required work in a day, and only two states limit the number of hours an employee can be required to work in a week/pay period. Pennsylvania is neither of those states.

While there are a few industry specific exceptions where there is a public safety factor (think airline pilot and truck driver) they do not apply in this situation.

With gas prices as high as they are, this may turn into a public safety matter! :D

cbg is correct! Sorry!

Of course, if employees are never allowed to leave work, think of all the gas that would be saved.
