Just found out that my co-worker is pregnant and I'm helping her find out more about CA's laws on pregnancy leave. She's thinking about just quitting because our HR people say she is not entitled to any kind of pay.
Is that true? Where can I read more?
Please provide any information possible. I know she needs the income so I want to find out as much as I can.
Thanks in advance!
And what income does she think she'll have if she quits? She won't be collecting unemployment if she quits for that reason.
How long has she worked for this employer and how many employees does the employer have?

She's been working here for 3 years and there are 28 employees.
Has she been paying into the state PFL program?
Note that even if her employer does not provide paid leave, that doesn't mean she will not be able to receive disability benefits. They are not the same thing.
You didn't answer the question about what income she thinks she will be entitled to if she quits. If she has something in mind it would be helpful to know what it is.

she will be entitled to state disablity pay once her doctor decides she should not longer work. Generally 2 - 4 week before the birth and 6 - 8 weeks after. Other than that HR is correct employers are not required ro provide paid leave for any type of medical leave, incluing pregnancy.
By she is thinking of just quitting, do you mean once she goes out on pregnancy disability, because she plans on staying home with the baby?
