Someone I know recently received papers naming him as the father of an 8 month old. The mother is just someone he slept with and might have gotten pregnant. He is going to get a DNA test to find out if he is in fact the father of the baby. Is there anyway to give up all rights to this child? Is he obligated to pay child support? Will he have to pay back child support from the time she was born? He doesn't want anything to do with the mother or child. What are his options. Thanks for your help.

the only way he can give up rights is if there is someone willing to adopt the child. Yes, if ordered, he must pay CS. No, he can't just give up rights and forget about his obligation and responsibility. He is stuck dealing with her for at least 18 years. If he didn't like her, he shouldn't have had sex with her. The child didn't ask to be here. Tell him to man up and do the right thing- support that child and develop a relationship with it.

In addition to milspec's reply- if he chooses to have a relationship with his child, he'll need to file for visitation right away. Being a parent is the most rewarding thing any person can have, so I hope he thinks long and hard before he chooses which way to go.
