I work for a mid sized manufacturing facility. I work first shift and earlier this week, we went in to work and at the start of the shift we were all told to go home because of a lack of materials. The company knew there would be no materials for our shift and did not provide a courtesy call to any of us.

I have a hour drive one way and to top it off the roads were extremely icy and dangerous. The company just apologized and said they do not owe anybody anything. They then said we were required to work saturday to make up for the lost day and it would not be overtime.

Can they do this? Do they have to compensate us for at least showing up on the day they sent us home?

Thanks for the time,

No, they only have to compenstate you for the time actually worked. It may be a lousy practice, but not illegal.

Tarheit is right. Eight states do have some type of "reporting time" minimum hours' pay requirements, but Minnesota isn't one of them.
