Winter is on the way and so are the colds and flus.
Last year we as a nation ran out of flu vaccines; so if your going to get a
vaccine you may want to start thinking about it soon..

Gee do you think they'll get any closer to formulating the proper
antibodies this time. I recall reading where much of the vaccine last
year was absolutely useless against the viral strain it was suppose to
protect against.

It was useless against the worst strain but not the intended stain... I think
the flu season passed rather quickly last year, in part cause people were
vaccinated to the other strain.

Not quickly enough. We got the wrong bug -- I was home sick for a week.

Yes, but did your wife get the same bug? Because that would *obviously* be

LOL! -- yes, she did. But for some reason I got it worse. Or, to be more
accurate, I reacted to it differently. When I get something like that I
essentially go to sleep for two or three days and just disappear except to
try to eat and drink a little. She just slows down and grumbles

the flu shot is the medical communities "best guess" as to what the
prevalent strains of virus will be in the coming flu season. They often
hit the mark pretty well. Last year was not one of them.
Wash your hands often and keep your fingers out of your eyes, and you'll

Is it dangerous just to be in the same room as a doornob, or does one
actually have to have contact?
What level of protective clothing should we wear when removing
doorknobs from our houses? Can they simply be put in the trash, or do
they need to be disposed of as toxic waste?
And should you really be putting this information on the internet
where Al Qaeda will have access to this knowledge? (Think suitcase
doorknob bombs on the streets of New York.)
I blame this all on the collapse of social norms during the 60s. In
the 1950s no one touched a doorknob before marriage, and afterward
women always let men open the door for them.

Fortunately, doorknobs do not transmit their dealy cargo via air. As
for protective clothing, I recommend nitrile gloves, tyvek body suits,
and and a NIOSH 91 respirator. I don't leave the house without it. If
that is unavailable, MOPP gear can be purchased from most military
surplus stores. After a few times, getting in and out of it in the
"clean room" is a snap!
With regards to doorknob disposal, if you boil them first, or use a
50-50 mix of household bleach and water, they do not need to be treated
as toxic wate.

that's me! Confident to the end :)
Since then, I think I may have fought it off once or twice. I have an incredible resistance and ability to fight off sickness. I am so much better at this since I started getting enough sleep. I had chronic insomnia for *years* and I got sick constantly.
Sleep is vastly underrated.
I made several lifestyle changes in the past 6-7 years that I feel have
greatly improved my health:
- I get a decent amount of sleep almost every day. I also sometimes nap on
weekends. So does my wife.
- I quit smoking and now take vitamins every day
- Regular exercise. i walk everyday (outside or treadmill), lift weights
several times a week, and hit a heavy bag several times a week.
- I have greatly reduced stress in my life. My wife and I come first.
Everyone else, get in line. We even permanently turned the ringers off on
our phones. Dysfunctional people who have chronic issues and add nothing to
our lives are cut loose.
- In relation to the stress thing, we have taken real control of our
finances. It's really made a difference in how I feel everyday.

Never again, if I can help it. the flu shot is the medical communities "best guess" as to what the prevalent strains of virus will be in the coming flu season. They often hit the mark pretty well. Last year was not one of them. Wash your hands often and keep your fingers out of your eyes, and you'll likely never get the flu... door knobs are especially effective means of transmitting disease.
Think about the handle of a grocery cart - somebody sneezes or puts their
hand over their mouth to cough, then puts that hand on the cart handle, then
parks the cart - and you walk up and grab the same handle. Yuck.

What is your understanding of faith in this sense? I too have
"faith in my immune system" and to me that means that
because I *believe* I won't get ill, I don't.
The only "places" where things appear to go wrong on me is
where I have put "holes" in my faith. For instance from a very
young age I seem to have had a fear of losing my eyesight --
I've had several eye operations.
any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic. well, then let's just say I don't like shots / pills / or any of that stuff. An aspirin for a headache is about all I want.
I think I liked the "faith" response a little more. But I guess this
is pretty much the same thing.

I lucked out. When I started taking Prozac for my depression, it cured
my insomnia, and it has stayed cured. This is apparently unusual - most
people with depression and insomnia get better with treatment, but few
are cured like I was.
When I was in the throes, melatonin worked pretty well for me.

I have a pretty solid immune system myself, and have never had a flu
shot. I don't think I've ever had the hit-by-truck type of flu (I'm
more likely to succumb to food poisoning that is over in a day or so).
With that said, I have to admit I'm a little spooked by the idea of
some deadly flu strain hitting us and wiping out a large proportion of
the population. We are awfully overdue for something like that.

Excellent!
Incidentally, you are nearly the same height/weight as my brother, who
is equally quite active. He has a bit of love handles but mostly he
carries his weight in his thighs, which are huge and muscular from
years of skiing and skateboarding.

Yes, I should have mentioned caffeine as well. I also have to quit
drinking it by early afternoon, else I can't sleep. On the rare
occasion that I have a glass of iced tea with supper (usually at my
folks' house), I don't sleep until 1 am, or later.
So Cal....try cutting down or eliminating caffeine and alcohol. I was

Alcohol has already been cut to zero, and for some time now due to
medications.
Caffeine is another story. I haven't been as successful at cutting back
on caffeine.

You might try working on the timing first -- start with a personal
'no caffeine after 5 PM' rule, and see how things go. Quantity is
still open, and the window in which you don't drink any gives you some
time to figure out what non-caffeinated beverages you get along with.
