I just got a job working as an idependent contractor in speech therapy in NY. We are trying to conceive our first child now. I have cystic fibrosis and am anticipating medical issues/bedrest when I get pregnant due to my disease. How do disability laws in New York apply to independent contractors with previous medical issues? Is the agency I work for required to hold my caseload for me? I realize that I am not covered through FMLA.
Another question I have is: Can I purchase a disability insurance that can help with my mortgage when I get sick/pregnant? My health insurance is through my husband's employer.

Do you have a contract?
If not, they could cut you off at any time.
OTOH, if you have been a good provider, they might be willing to work with you during what will be a difficult period for you.
I cannot answer the other questions, but I wish you the best of luck.
There's nothing preventing you from purchasing private disability insurance if you can find a carrier that will accept you with cystic fibrosis. Can't hurt to try.

The agency isn't required to hold your case load for you automatically but when and how your contract works depends upon how it is worded. Only a lawyer who has reviewed the entire contract can tell you whether any particular action is in violation.

Hi. I did underwriting for a private ins. co. & cystic fibrosis would be a medical condition we would decline for DI coverage. However, it wouldn't hurt to contact an ins. broker who sells policies for more than one co. & see what they can do for you. Right off I don't know any co. that would issue DI coverage to someone with cystic fibrosis.

Not to mention that most DI's have a waiting period before they pay out to avoid exactly what you are trying to do...
Pay for a few months and have the insurance company pay for your lost wages during pregnancy.
It will be tough and/or expensive. Really expensive.
