I heard that employees must be paid to attend mandatory meetings. Is this true? Are there exception to this?

A non-exempt employee who is required to attend a mandatory meeting must be paid for it. An exempt employee never has to be paid more than their regular salary no matter how many mandatory meeting they attend.

Non-exempts are often paid on an hourly basis and ALWAYS get overtime, if worked. If they attend a mandatory meeting, they must be paid for the time.

Exempt employees are usually salaried and get the same salary every week, no matter how many hours they work. Attending a mandatory meeting does not entitle them to extra pay. Working 80 hours a week when they normallly work 40 hours does not, either.

And, the determination as to whether or not a worker meets the criteria for exempt status is based on job duties. Not job title.
