I was legitimately (although I know my Drs note means nothing) sick this week and used a sick day. The second day I called in sick my boss called my home and told me there was a project that needed to be completed and that I needed to report to work. She said using a second sick day made me look unprofessional and that she had contacted HR to find out "what to do about the situation". Against my better judgement for health reasons, I did report to work and complete the projects that day.
However, I was very concerned about her having contacted our HR dept. and saying that I was acting in an unprofessional manner for taking a sick day, so I contacted our VP of HR and requested clarification of the sick day policy. We have a meeting next Wed but I'd like to be prepared.
My question in a nutshell, I know my company isn't required to provide sick pay, but they do. I did not use any sick time that I did not already accrue (I actually carried sick time over from last year and have plenty available). Can they legally fire me for using company provided sick time in accordance with their policy? My recent review and generous bonus prove performance is not an issue.
We are a large 2000+ employee company where I have worked full time for 2 years.
