I was informed today that my full time hours will be cut to half time the next few weeks due to finances. Can they legally do that (I have been there 3 years full time) without laying me off? I think they are avoiding laying me off because they will have to pay unemployment. I was told that they either need to keep me on full time or lay me off completely - not hold me in limbo and making it so I cannot collect. I hate to give them an ultimatum, but I do need to work full time.

Thanks!

Whoever told you that was mistaken, but you may be able to collect unemployment if your hours are cut enough.

If your hours are cut, apply for unemployment. Costs you nothing aside from some few minutes to do so.

Thank you. Not quite the answer I wanted but at least an answer. I will apply if my hours do get cut.
