I had a couple of questions, if you don't mind (as I am considering
the possibility of moving to New England (specifically ME) someday):

Is it really so cold there in the winter that you HAVE to use plugin engine
block heaters if you don't have a garage? (I'm just trying to get an idea
of it)
(I once lived in Albany, but that was MANY eons ago - as a kid).

And that many, if not most people suffer from S.A.D. during the winter
season?

And that you rarely see the sun in the winter - lots of dreary overcast
days?

Or is this all just hearsay, and overhyped, and just BS?

day.... So I have not heard of a lot of winter depression. Folks who grew up
around here go out in the cold. It is simply a matter of having the right
clothing.

very few hot days. Some years you get dumped with a ton of snow, some years

A lot of people suffer from SAD, but I wouldn't say the majority.
You have to make a point to get your butt outside, regardless of the
temperature.

I'm not sure where he's getting this "hype" from, other than his own
assumptions.


Bill, if you're planning on moving somewhere, then use your computer
to do some research on the weather and lifestyles of the places you
are thinking of moving to. This is what I'm doing with my planned
move to VT.

Once you've decided on your general relocation point, you can pull
statistics up for past weather to get a general idea of what you're
getting yourself into as well as a whole host of other information
that is available. As you have been told multiple times in the
past.. google is your friend. Here is a link to get yourself

It lists several things, such as average cost of a home, percent of
the population that is married, vs. single and it also lists the
average temperatures for summer and winter, along with crime rates

Bill, I went to college for 4 years in NH. Yes, it is so cold that
your nose hairs freeze. No, the sun shines during the winter far more
than it does in Seattle. The days that the sun shines on the snow and
the icicles hanging from the trees are of the most beautiful things I
have ever seen. Not to mention the fall in NH. The colors are
breathtaking.

However, you could not get me to live anywhere that cold for the rest
of my life. There is also "black fly season". That is sometime
around April or May when the snow is melthing everywhere and there are
these tiny black flies. If you have the skin that I have, they'll
love you. And eat you alive. You can't stand outside and have a
conversation with someone or else they go in every place they can find
(eyes, ears, mouth). The bites suck too. People who work outdoors
often wear head gear.

It is a beautiful place though Bill. Life is slow and simple-at least
it was back in the early 70's. I suggest going on vacation and
getting a feel and talking to the "townies".

When I visited CA for two weeks, I ended up leasing an apartment. You
never know. A change might do you good!

Some of us New Englanders *can* have a tendency to over-dramatize the
severity of winters here in much the same way old men will tell you that
when THEY were a boy, they had to walk to school up hill both ways.

How long ago did you live in NH? I do not know if the Farmer's Almanac would
bear this out, but it seems to not get as cold as I remember from childhood
and teenhood.

For NH it depends very much where you are. Manchester and south are
practically Boston suburns now.

rotten habit of defending Dads in custody disputes, often probono if they
cannot afford it.

But is your car parked outside? If it's in a garage, you wouldn't need
an engine block heater, I'd expect.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (or something close to that), as I recall.
I've read that some people get these special sun lamps, and use them for a
couple of hours a day to prevent getting depressed.

I know about the gorgeous colors of the leaves. I had experienced that
when living (close to) there, in Albany

I have been doing that on summer vacations, and really enjoy it Getting
to know the local townies. I just haven't experienced the other seasons
there, except as a kid, in Albany. But as a kid, you can't get enough of
the snow! As an adult, shoveling the driveway sucks, but, what can you
do... Hopefully it's only once a week, and not every day, with 3 foot
drifts.

Yeah, I know. My long term plans call for a change. Actually, not all
that long term. I expect there will be some big changes in that regard
within the next 5 years.

our cars in the garage.
(I once lived in Albany, but that was MANY eons ago - as a kid). And that many, if not most people suffer from S.A.D. during the winter season? What is SAD? Seasonal something depression? Even in winter we get sun. The.. Seasonal Affective Disorder (or something close to that), as I recall. I've read that some people get these special sun lamps, and use them for a couple of hours a day to prevent getting depressed. weather changes a lot. So, unlike say Portland where it pretty much drizzles all winter long, Now that part is interesting - I didn't know that. The only times I've been to ME are in the summer (have been doing this for a few summers - but close to the NH border). we will have 3 sunny days and then a snowy day then a rainy day.... So I have not heard of a lot of winter depression. Folks who
grew up around here go out in the cold. It is simply a matter of having the
right clothing. And that you rarely see the sun in the winter - lots of dreary overcast days? Years differ. Last summer was hot, hot, hot and dry. This year we hav
had very few hot days. Some years you get dumped with a ton of snow, some years less. But even still, we do get sun. Dreary overcast is more pacific northwest than new england. Or is this all just hearsay, and overhyped, and just BS? (seriously, I want to know what it's like) Did I give you enough info? Well, you can never give me too much info. I like hearing about it firsthand from you guys, in addition to reading about it on the net.
