We're a manufacturing facility in Mass. We are switching our shifts around. We have some employees who have volunteered to work 7 days in a row to help make this shift change happen. Is it legal to allow them to work 7 days in a row? Some are hourly and some are salary.

Thanks for any info...

Basically, the answer is no. Except under a limited set of circumstances, an employer can not allow an employee to work without a day of rest.

MGL c. 149, section 48 states that everyone must have 1 day of rest every 7days. c.149, s.51 states that the employer must post lists of every employee designating the day of rest for each, and that no person shall be required or allowed to work on his day of rest. c.149, s.51A states that the AG may grant a 60 day exemption for an employer.
