Hello, I have a question about a lease, my former boyfriend & I lived together until June 2005, I had filed bankrutpcy (due to my divorce in 2003) and was unable to rent property. He rented the house and listed me and my daughter as occupants or so he had said. Our agreement was that I would pay the utlilties and he would cover the rent. We split up in June 2006 due to his mental and physical abuse and I moved in with my mother. I was served papers yesterday for eviction from the house that he lives in. The copy of the lease has my name and what is suppose to be my signature on it. It is very clear that this is his handwritting and you can tell because the names are next to each other.

The landlord wants $8000 for back rent, he has not paid rent for 7 months. I do not know what to do because I dont think I should have to pay for soemthing that I did not sign, also when I left him I qualified for legal aid due to the abuse and when the attorney had requested from the landlord a copy of the lease he refused to send her one, so I am wondering if the landlord knew that my signature was forged. I dont know what direction to go in this. Mentally I am exhausted and broke, and I wouldnt qualify for legal aid for this. If anyone knows what I need to do please help point me in the right direction.

Thanks
