My grandaugher has been attending a high school that has not met state standards in 2 years. She is a special ed student who tries very hard to get good grades. She hates this school and was failing so I sent her to live with her half sister in a different district where she got excellent grades this last semester. The problem now is that she has had to move home due to differences with her sister and will have to return to the original school that was failing her. This school gives us the right to send her to any other school since they have not met state standards, but no other schools are accepting students out of district. (catch 22) She is now refusing to go back to the old school since the holidays last week. She has left home and can not be considered a runaway because she is 17. The child is rebelling because she hates the old school that doesn't teach anything, but she is willing to go to another school. What recourse do I now have? She is moving from friend to friend and needs to be in school. I am legally responsible for her but the police won't do anything because of her age. I am worried for this girls future. My grandaughter wants to graduate and says she will come home if I can get her in another public school. My friend agreed to let her live with her so she could go to a new school. The school district refused stating that I had to live in that district for her to be able to attend. I told them I would pay for an apt for my grandaugher to attend and they said they wouldn't enroll her unless I lived in their district. Will I get in trouble for truancy? Do we have any legal rights for her to attend another school? She is also on SSI disability. Are any of her rights being violated? This has been difficult for me. I live in a nice area and can't move. It is a shame that we pay school taxes for a terrible school with a bad reputation. I believe the state will take them over next year but that doesn't help now. Sorry for rambling on. Please advise. Thanks.
