Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not it was legal for a tenant to ask a subtenant for a security deposit?
I live with 2 roommates, both of whom are on the lease. I moved in a month after the lease was signed (since it was a 2/convertible 3 bedroom) Not only did i pay 1/3 for the wall construction (which technically should have been constructed before I was there -another girl lived there for 2 weeks before I moved in)
but one of the 2 girls asked me for first/last month as well as security deposit. so i paid the 2020 (1st and last) but was a little iffy about the security deposit.
i am not on the lease and feel as though i should not be equally liable. not to mention the fact that the security deposit is acutally going to one of the girls' bank accounts, not the landlord, who i would understand asking for it.
the building knows i live there, the leasing office knows i live there, so i'm concerned that if i give her another 1010, that if i decide to move out before their lease expires (in oct 07) that I won't get my 1010 back....
any ideas? thoughts? knowledge of the law really useful here :o) thanks!
