I will try to make this as brief as possible.
I work for a gas station. On thursday the 30th a employee who worked the morning shift broke company policy and left her deposit for me to take that night. She has done this often. I've told my manager, and my assistant manager. They always claimed something would be done, but this employee has been favored in the past and could get away with anything. I was always just uncomfortable having someone elses deposit in the store, since we work alone and everything.
So, the night in question went by rather poorly. A tipped over change drawer, a wet paper bag and shattering glass bottles, and a drive off. All at the end of my shift. So, after all this I finish up my paper work, and walk out into the store. The midnight guy was getting yelled at so I quickly diffused that situation. Sold him some change and left to goto the bank.
All is good. Until Monday. I get a call from my manager Jasper. He asks if I remembered Michelle leaving her deposit on Thursday. Thinking back a few days I answer yeah.
In fact the only reason I remembered is becaus the midnight guy Mike came in early and was talking to me, he saw her bag and made comments about how its against policy to leave your deposit and how she gets away with anything she wants, blah, blah.
The manager then tells me the deposit has turned up missing and asked if I had any idea what happened to it. And then asked if I remembered taking the depoist to the bank.
I thought, and thought. I honestly didn't remember grabbing it from the floor safe. I remembered breaking the bottles, I remembered Mike arguing with the customer. But nowhere do I remember taking the second deposit. It's such a menial task driving across the street to the bank, and asking me 3 days later. It's always such an insignificant task I just don't remember.
Well, my deposit was at the bank. Michelles was missing. So I said to Jasper, well if I grabbed her deposit it got to the bank. Period. Mine was there, so if I had hers it would be there to. He said thats what he thought, he said he knew I didnt take it. I offered to take a polygraph. He said he'd tell the office that.
A few hours later Jasper called me back and told me that Michelle and I were both suspended indefinately until the deposit was recovered. I figured ok well, I've got 3 days in a row off it'll all be figured out by then. The cops in the meantime call and tell me they'll need a statement, I said no problem and they said they'd be in touch. (they already had Michelles statement) Thursday rolls around and no word from my manager. I start missing days of work. I figure ok well I understand them covering my shifts in case it wasn't worked out but it'll be resolved. I was put on the schedule for the next week(last week). Didn't hear anything.
So, on Wednesday the day before my supposed next day I called the store. I spoke to my assistant manager Jeff who said the cops wouldn't be able to set up a polygraph for 3-4 more weeks. So, I call my managers cell. He says the same thing. The cops won't look into it for 3-4 weeks. To me that seems kind of foolish. I mean if money is missing wouldn't time be of the essence? So that leads me to believe they are just keeping us suspended hoping on of us quits.
My manager then goes on to tell me that at another store they had a similar issue happen, it turns out the deposit got rolled up inside the bank drop box and that Jasper would be calling a company to take the face off the drop box.
That was all on last week Wednesday...he said he'd be in touch.
Well I called him yesterday. Asked if there had been any progress. He said no, that he would be calling the people to take off the face tomorrow which is today. I got a little mad and said well Jasper you're tomorrow is another day Michelle and I are off work, If I have a job i'd like to be working. I mean how can this company just suspend us without a write-up and expect us to sit off of work for more than a month. He said he didn't know and that he was trying his best.
He then mentioned that on Sunday our assistant manager had the banks deposit box lock up and he had to call in someone to get the key back and make sure the deposit went down as the whole think was jammed.
Oh, and I didn't mention that on that original Thursday in question. That night Mike passed out and had to be taken out in an ambulance(don't ask). So who knows who was behind the register while the store was unattended.
Then the next morning there was 4 employees working.
AND, the deposit that is missing goes un-noticed Friday? The paperwork for Thursday should have been done then. Why wasn't it picked up by the manager? Why wasn't it picked up on Saturday?
Oh, and i'm sure your wondering about cameras. We have 2 cameras in the store, neither covers the area where the deposit was left. That place is in a total blind spot. What about the banks camera? Well, turns out they have a sign that says this deposit box is under 24hr watch and all that but they don't actually have a camera.
So, here I sit suspended. Going on my 3rd week. And for what? I broke no company policy. Her deposit was not my responsiblity. She broke policy and his suspended as well.
They have no proof of anything. And so many other factors contribute into this. Now I am getting no answers and they expect us to wait more than a month.
I want to file for unemployment but I don't know if I have any legs to stand on with my claim. Any advice is appreciated.
