I think I already know the answer to this, but is there a finite number of hours an employer can ask you to work in a pay period? I've not had a day off since tuesday, dec 5th and i'm scheduled through saturday, dec 23. Now, it'll be a great check, no doubt, but who can enjoy it? No, i'm not in retail, i'm a research nurse.

Also, is there a limited number of overnight shifts that can be worked in a row without a night off? I've been scheduled for 9 in a row and can already feel the exhaustion taking over. hehe

I'm not talking about hours volunteered to work, i'm talking about hours that are scheduled. Thanks =)

As a general rule, there are no limits on how many hours a day or days a week an employer can require an employee to work, although there are some state exceptions and some industry exceptions.

Texas is not a state known for its employee-friendly laws.

The finite maximum number of hours that may be legally scheduled in a workweek (pay periods are irrelevant) is 168. Texas has no limit to the number of hours an employer may require, save a few jobs in specific industries, and in retail. There is also no limit in federal law.

Further, pay laws in only a very few states distinguish between weekdays and weekends, and I don't believe any state (certainly not Texas) distinguishes between day and night.

It helps that you at least don't have to fight for overtime compensation.

Yes, my company doesn't argue about OT, it was all authorized before the schedule was posted. It's a good company and I enjoy my job, just not looking forward to 9 overnights in a row. =)

Are you the only one being forced to work them hours and are there others that could be forced to work to lighten the load for you, or are you the only one?

No, no, everyone's working alot of hours to get everything done. It's not so bad. Big check. I just wondered if there were statutes, that's all. Thanks for all y'alls time =)
