The company I work for posts a schedule every week.
Sometimes you have an on call shift AFTER a shift you already worked and sometimes you don't.
Several times I have been told that you must stay longer than what was scheduled, especially when closing.
I was told that if you were a closer, meaning that you were scheduled until 11:30, regardless of what time you are scheduled that you had to stay until the store was done. Some how that seems shady...

so my questions are these:

1) Can they make me work longer than my posted scheduled time? If not, can I be written up for it, if I refuse to work later than posted. For example if I close and I'm scheduled till 11:30 can they make me stay until Midnight or later?

2) What are the terms for on call shifts? What must the employer fulfill in order to have on call shifts and what must the employee fulfill in order to have on call shifts? Seems funny if I already worked 10-5 and at 2, I ask if you need me and you say no, then change your mind as I'm walking out the door.

They absolutely can make you work beyond your scheduled shift. If the store was supposed to close at 11:30, but not everything gets done until 1 AM, you stay.

If you leave without permission, I would not write you up. I would fire you.

1. Yes and yes.

2. I'm not sure I understand the question. The employer is free to set the schedules or make changes at any time. The employee is free to refuse at any time, and be disciplined up to, and including, termination if the employer so desires.

Basically, there is no law that addresses notice of scheduling changes or notice of mandatory overtime.
