Is there a law in CA that requires an employer to pay an employee a minimum of 4 hours, if they show up to work on their first day?

We had an employee show up at a job site, but wasn't pulling his weight immediately after being put to work. Our site sup. let him stick around for 4 hours before letting him go, as he thought that was the law. Is this the right way, or can you let him (temp employee) go immediately? Labor code reference would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

You are referring to California's, "reporting time" pay laws. You can read all about them here http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/FAQ_ReportingTimePay.htm

Having said that, you could have let him go after 1 minute. Still would have had to pay the 4 hours though (assuming he was scheduled for 8).
