Hi,

We recently got a new time clock and, in addition to punching in and out, we have to keep a manual log of our time to be turned in every week. I had asked how to fill out overtime and they said that it can only be filled out if it's approved first. But when I see my time card from the clock I see that I had maybe 10 minutes extra every day. I asked if this counts and they said overtime is calculated by increments of 15 minutes, so, no it doesn't count. I am non-exempt so I don't know what qualifies as overtime here. Is it up to them what I get paid and how much overtime will be?

But when I see my time card from the clock I see that I had maybe 10 minutes extra every day. Is that time you actually worked or is it time spent cleaning up, going to the restroom, getting your coat, etc.?

The extra time is work time, but it only takes me two minutes to get my coat and leave. Would that have to be taken out? That seems strange if I have to go punch out and then come back and get my coat and then leave. We get two 10 minute breaks but I normally don't take those, so wouldn't that count for any extra time it takes for other stuff? I was just wondering if I should be getting the extra time since I was working and if it should count as overtime.

Any break of less than 20 minutes must be paid (under federal law), so that would have nothing to do with it, whether you take them or not (PA law does not require the employer to provide rest breaks).

Rounding must be done consistently, no matter to whose advantage the policy accrues. If you work until 20 minutes after the hour, do you get paid until 30 minutes after? If you start work at 10 minutes until the hour, what do you get paid for?
