Could someone please tell me how long a landlord has to return the security deposit and also if he was required to put it in an account that accrues interest? Thank you in advance.

Hi, go to www.buyingahouseandsavingmoney.com and click on Lease and Rental Agreements. Then click on your State and you should find the answer.

Whatever is in the written lease is when the deposit is to be returned. Typically, in WV leases are written for the deposit to be returned within 30 days after the last day of the lease.

The landlord is not required to put the deposit in an interest bearing account or any type of account at all.

If you don't have a written lease and it has been more than 30 days since you moved out, he should have returned the deposit. There are action steps you can take to get your deposit back.
