My wife is a high risk pregnancy due to abruption and pre-mature births for our current 2 children so she is taking off work for the last month of this third and final pregnancy. I am wondering if I take off work using FMLA for 2-3 weeks at the very end of the pregnancy to insure she can relax and not have to take care of our 2 girls durring the holiday season when they are out of school and daycare; can I also draw disability for this time? If so how do I find out how much this would be in Calif.

Thank you!

Paid Family leave is available through the state http://www.edd.ca.gov/rdsgnfaq.htm#Paid%20Family%20Leave
if your wife need you to care for her (not to care for your children while she can't). You can take up to 6 weeks paid. It is paid at 55% of your income, roughly.

Megan,

Thanks so much for the info and the link. I am applying with my employer next week. It will be nice to be home to take care of my wife since she should be in bed or resting the last few weeks of this pregnancy (per her OBGYN's call).

One last question though. I have no leave balance since we just got back from a vacation 2 mos ago. As a matter of fact my employer has allowed me to go into neg leave bal a bit since I have been with them for several years. Since I have no leave time when will the Paid Family Leave kick in? Is there a 4-5 day period you have to be off before it kicks in like my wifes disability? I couldn't find anything about this on the website.

Thanks again,
