My employer has a nasty habit of altering time sheets. Because our time clock is electronic, and we don't recieve a hard copy, it is impossible to know exactly how they have altered my time sheets, I just know that I am not being payed for all hours worked. The problem is that there is no way to know how the time sheet has been altered, so I don't know if the deductions are legitimate or not. I understand that they do not have to pay me for unauthorized overtime, but I have no way to know if they are paying me for all authorized overtime. Last night I left a request for corrected and uncorrected time sheets for pay periods in question, and for all pay periods in the future. Am I within my rights in making this request? It is my understanding that they cannot alter my time sheets without consent, and I have no problem if they alter them when there is a legit reason, but I need to know what has been done. (I am regularly asked to punch in early/stay late)

There are only a couple of states I know of where the employer would be required to give you this information, and I don't believe Michigan is one of them.

Have you kept your own records? If not, I suggest you do so in the future. For past pay periods, how much are we talking about here and over what period of time?

For one pay period it was 7-8 hours of overtime, for the most recent it was about 3 hours of overtime.

I'm curious, if my employer doesn't need to show me what hours I'm being paid for, how am I supposed to know if I am trul being paid for hours worked? I understand that they could "not pay me for hours worked without manager approval", but without knowing which hours they are cutting, how can I complain when I have a legitimate gripe?

You can file a claim with the state Dept. of Labor. When they investigate, the employer will be required to provide the time records to them.
