My kids are still at school and work part time, on an hourly basis, for a local fast food franchise in Arizona. The owner requires mandatory meetings without pay (illegal  ), docks pay and fines the employee's for dress violations without their agreement (very questionable and probably illegal :( ) but my enquiry to this erudite forum is regarding the owner's weird overtime policy.
The kids are paid every two weeks and the owner calculates the overtime based on a two week period. It goes like this:
Week one - Hours worked = 44
Week two - Hours worked = 36
Total hours for two weeks = 80
Therefore no overtime pay ! ! ! ! ? ? ? ?
Surely this is not right.
These guys are 16, 17 and 18 and are learning a valuable lesson in life working for this witch but I hate to see them get screwed. I would like them to know what is right and what is wrong in their employment as well as life.
(Thank you all those who sympathize with me having three teenagers in the house. :) )

Arizona has no overtime laws. Sorry

You might want to get the boys to do some research into the labor statutes. It will be a good education for them. ;) :D

Well, Arizona may have no rules, but the feds do.
Work more than 40 hours in a work week, you must be paid overtime.
Attend mandatory training, you must be paid for the time there.
Docking pay is generally not allowed and certainly not for the situations you mentioned.
My deepest sympathies for having three teens. I had a difficult enough time with two, at one point.
Luckily, one of those (no longer a teen) has rewarded me with a granddaughter. She is so much easier to care for than her father or her aunt!
Thanks for the prompt reply GotSmart.
Is it not the case that, if a state has no overtime laws the fedral law applies and the federal law states: "Overtime pay at a rate of not less than one and one-half times their regular rates of pay is required after 40 hours of work in a workweek."? ( http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/flsa/ )
The "guys" are boy, girl, boy and, in my household the boys are arguably a little easier - most of the time. :) Actually, are three are truely a blessing.

That's what GotSmart said already.
Let's try once more.
Week one 40 hours regular, 4 hours overtime
Week two 36 hours regular only
This is assuming the employer is even subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
