Are employers required to post a Labor Law Poster where employees can see it, and read it freely? I haven't seen one since I've been at my current job, which has been 13 months.

JaSmith 10-21-2006, 11:00 AM Are employers required to post a Labor Law Poster where employees can see it, and read it freely? I haven't seen one since I've been at my current job, which has been 13 months. JaSmith ScottB 10-21-2006, 11:30 AM http://www.michigan.gov/documents/cis/MWPosting.Optional_9_25_06_single_page_173925_7.pd f The only one I could find. Federal posters should be there, too. robb71 10-21-2006, 12:10 PM The most commonplace to post is the lunchroom or common meeting area. If you are not looking for it, there is a good chance that you may overlook it. In all honesty, most employees don't notice them. And as you can see from the link ScottB posted, the poster is not that conspicuous. I wouldn't be surprised if you walk by daily and don't notice it. ScottB 10-21-2006, 12:23 PM I wouldn't be surprised if you walk by daily and don't notice it. Yeah, no kidding, Robb. A couple of years ago, a legislator here wanted to stop us from being "at will." She failed, but the DOL was required to make the "at will" portion of the required poster in bold print. I commented to the Labor Committee that no one reads the stupid posters anyway. Pattymd 10-21-2006, 04:37 PM Yeah, no kidding, Robb. A couple of years ago, a legislator here wanted to stop us from being "at will." She failed, but the DOL was required to make the "at will" portion of the required poster in bold print. I commented to the Labor Committee that no one reads the stupid posters anyway. Yeah, they read those about as often as they read the pay check messages or the stuffers. :( JaSmith 10-21-2006, 10:43 PM I'm not exactly sure what each of you said. I understand that you can walk by them and not notice. We don't have a "break room" or real sit down lunch area for employees to gather. I would have noticed if I had seen one, because I've been looking around for them since my second job, when I noticed what they were. I like the idea of refering employees to them. I've read the entire thing at least 20 times all the way through, so yeah, people do read them. All I really wanted to know was, Are employers required to post them? If you are unsure about what poster that I'm talking about, scroll all the way to the top of the page, and read the banner. The information given, when you click on that link states "The state and federal government mandates that both state and federal posters be posted." I was curious on if this was true. My employer doesn't have one, and I'd like to make him get one. JaSmith robb71 10-22-2006, 05:12 AM Yes employers are required to post these in public places where employees have ready access to see them. In a restaurant environment, they are often posted in the kitchen work area. Employers are pretty much free to put them wherever they please. The only requirement is that the posting area be accessible to all employees. Our point is that while the posters are posted, most employees do not notice them. Of course some do and some take the time to read through them. Unfortunately that is an exception and not the rule of thumb. I agree that if the posters are not posted that would be a problem. I suppose if Wage & Hour ever did an audit this would be one point that would cause concern. ScottB 10-22-2006, 06:38 AM I should point out that the link I posted was solely for Michigan's labor laws. There are lots of Federal posting requirements, too. |
